Harold D. Steele    (1914 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - Harold D. "Red" Steele, 93, Sherwood, died at 12:02 a.m. Friday, March 21, 2008, in Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Hicksville.

He was born June 21, 1914, in Paulding County, son of William and Melvia (Cramer) Steele. In 1936, he married Madonna Swary, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II and was an electrical contractor and retired owner of Steele Electric, Sherwood. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church-Delaware Bend, IBEW Local 8 Retirees, Defiance AMVETS Post 1991, Defiance VFW Post 3360 and Farmer American Legion Post 137.

Also surviving are three sons, R. Philip (Paula) of N. Henderson, Ill.; Ned (Alice) of Hicksville and Kent (Martha) of Delta Junction, Ark.; a daughter, LeAnn (Larry) Fritch, Ney; a brother, Russel "Joe," Oakwood; a sister, Mae Bieniek, Temperance, Mich.; and 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a brother. Frances; two sisters, Olive Pessefall and one in infancy; and three grandsons and a great-grandson.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Catholic Cemetery in Delaware Bend, with Father Dave Tscherne officiating and military rites provided by Sherwood VFW Post 5665. Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m.

James L. Beardsley     (1928 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - James L. Beardsley, 79, Sherwood, died at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, in his residence.


He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Defiance, the son of LeRoy and Ethel (Runnion) Beardsley. In 1952, he married Edna Vogelsong, who survives. He was a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He worked at the Defiance Post Office for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member and past president of Local National Letter Carriers and a former scout master. He was a past post commander and life member of DAV and life member of Defiance VFW Post 3360. He received his high school diploma with the help of the U.S. government ruling for the veterans who served in World War II.

Also surviving are two daughters, Diane (Ronald) Bierly of Defiance and Edna (Eric) Dix, Sherwood; five sons, James Jr. of Denver, Colo., Steven and Tony of Sherwood and Chris and Rick, Defiance; and 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were two sisters, Ruth Coffman and Martha Beardsley; and six brothers, Earl, Richard, Frank, Ralph, Livingston and Robert.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, with Pastor Don Harris officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance, with military honors accorded by Defiance VFW Post 3360. Visitation is from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Helen Simon Nusbaum    (1911 - 2008)

SHERWOOD - Helen (Pat) Y. Simon Nusbaum, 96, Sherwood, died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Defiance In-Patient Hospice Center.

She was born Oct. 31, 1911, in Toledo, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Riordon) Patterson. In 1933, she married Walter Simon, who preceded her in death. In 1980, she married Robert Nusbaum, who preceded her in death. She was a licensed practical nurse for 30 years at Paulding and Defiance hospitals and a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church in Delaware Bend, the Licensed Practical Nurses Association, Defiance Hospital Auxiliary, Defiance College Women's Commission, Altar Rosary Society and 55 Plus Club.

Surviving are three daughters, Ida (Denver) Hammon of Hamilton, Ind., Mary Anne Hauenstein of Lima and Jane (Leonard) DeWitt, Elkhart, Ind.; a son, Mike (Sandy) Simon, Defiance; two stepdaughters, Mary Alice (Robert) Hulbert of Defiance and Ellen Simonis, Sherwood; six stepsons, Robert Nusbaum of Toledo, Neil (Judy) Nusbaum of Angola, Ind., James (Roseann) and Paul (Judy) Nusbaum of Sherwood, Philip (Phyllis) Nusbaum of Centerville, Mich., and Bill (Judy) Nusbaum, Burlington, Ontario, Canada; and 13 grandchildren, 36 stepgrandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 62 great-stepgrandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were a son, Walter "Thad" Simon Jr.; and three great-stepgrandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Isidore Catholic Church, Marysdale, with Father Dave Tscherne officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance County. Visitation is from 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance, with a scripture service at 8:30 p.m.

Preferred memorials are to Defiance County Humane Society or Hospice the Caring Way of Defiance.

Thelma M. Sponseller    (1931 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - Former Sherwood resident Thelma M. Sponseller, 76, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, in Brookview Healthcare Center, Defiance.

She was born May 21, 1931, in Mark Center, the daughter of George and Ethel (Elser) Obenland. In 1951, she married Jerald Sponseller, who died in 2001. She was a graduate of Mark Center High School.

Surviving are two daughters, Pamela (Ronald) Pierce of Ney and Jill (Lee) Nihart, Bryan; a son, Scott Sponseller, Massachusetts; two sisters, Ellen Cooper of Hicksville and Jan Harter, Sherwood; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Krill Funeral Home, Bryan, with Jim Stinehelfer officiating. Burial will be in Lost Creek Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to service Monday.

Ben "Jeff" Blankenship    (1958 - 2008)

SHERWOOD - Ben "Jeff" Blankenship, 49, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Toledo Hospital.


Born in Van Wert on May 6, 1958, he was the son of Martha and Ben Blankenship. On Sept. 29, 1979, he married Tamara Laney, and she survives.


He was a 1977 graduate of Paulding High School, and was employed with Sims Cab in Payne for 21 years until the company was moved. Mr. Blankenship then worked at Global Suspensions Systems in Bryan for four years.


He was a life member of the Defiance Fish and Game Club and Fort Defiance Deer Hunters Club, and was a member of the Paulding Eagles. Surviving in addition to his wife are his father, Benjamin Blankenship of Paulding; a daughter, Jennifer Blankenship of Van Wert; a son, Brandon Blankenship of Paulding; four grandchildren, Mackenzie, Connor, Landon and Tyler Blankenship; and three sisters, Wilma (and husband, Ted) Saylor of Convoy, Wanda McCoy of Paulding and Diana Serrado of Titusville, Pa.


Preceding him in death were his mother, Martha Ann; a daughter, Jessica Nicole Blankenship; a brother, Donald Cecil Blankenship; and a sister, Brenda Lee Blankenship.


Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Den Herder Funeral Home, Paulding, Ohio. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Ben Lowell officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Preferred memorials are to the family.

NC Fuller    (1936 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - NC Fuller, 71, Sherwood, died at 10:55 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, in Defiance Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 22, 1936, in Hanover, W.Va., the son of Basil and Sarah (Bostic) Fuller. He was employed by Hayes-Albion, Bryan, and then as a security guard in New Castle, Del., prior to his return to the Sherwood area. He was a former member of Bryan Eagles Aerie 2233.

Surviving are a daughter, Loretta (Greg) Ricker, Sherwood; two sisters, Arbutus McGlaughlin of New Castle, Del., and Truda Ratliff, Walnut Cove, N.C.; a brother, Gaylord Fuller, Monarch, S.C.; and four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Herman N. Trausch    (1936 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - Herman N. Trausch, age 71, of Sherwood, Ohio, died at 3:25 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, in Lima Memorial Hospital from complications following cardiac surgery.

 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. While living in Cridersville, Ohio, Mr. Trausch was employed as layout inspector at General Dynamics, Lima, Ohio. He then retired from Wilco Tool & Die in Bryan, Ohio. An avid hunter, fisherman and motorcyclist who loved camping and traveling, Mr. Trausch was a member of AmVets and the V.F.W. in Defiance, Ohio, and a member of the NRA and American Shooters.

Herman N. Trausch was born on April 3, 1936, in Williams County, Ohio, the son of Albert and Leona (Schumacher) Trausch. He married Arlene Mae Austin on July 25, 1959, and she preceded him in death in 1989.

Mr. Trausch is survived by three daughters, Elaine (Rick) Garrett, of Bowling Green, Ohio, Michele (Hollyle) Trausch, of Cridersville, Ohio, and Kelly Zerante, of Bryant, Indiana, one son, Scott (Michelle) Trausch, of Ridgeville, Indiana, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his companion, Deanna Ankney, of Sherwood, Ohio, and three brothers, Al (Joan) Trausch, of Merry Lake, Michigan, Duane (Vivian) Trausch, of Montpelier, Ohio, and Frank (Deb) Trausch, of Bryan, Ohio.

Services for Herman N. Trausch will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2008, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, Ohio, with Father Stephen Schroeder officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Edgerton. Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan, Ohio, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, and in the church one hour prior to the service. There will be recitation of the rosary at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 14.

Elmer E. Cooley    (1921 - 2008)

SHERWOOD - Elmer E. Cooley, age 86, of Sherwood, died early Sunday morning, February 3, 2008 in the Brookview Nursing Care Center of Defiance.

 

Mr. Cooley was a retired Furniture Maker at the former Holabird Company in Bryan, a farmer and a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Sherwood. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran having served during World War II.
 

Born December 14, 1921 in Bryan, Ohio, he was the son of Alva & Ellen (Wentmor) Cooley. He married Inez Arlene (Miller) on July 24, 1976 and she survives. In addition to his wife, a brother, Harold and wife Edna Cooley of Bryan, sisters, Beatrice Algeo of Bryan and Bernice Miller of Napoleon and several nieces and nephews survive Elmer. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Elmer E. Cooley will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 11:00a.m. in the Burr Funeral Home & Crematory of Sherwood with Rev. Robert Eble officiating. Burial will follow in Sherwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 from 4:00-8:00p.m.in the funeral home.

James W. Flory    (1936 - 2008)

SHERWOOD - James W. Flory, 71, Sherwood, died at 9:48 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, in his home.

He was born May 4, 1936, in Jewell, the son of William and Clara (Seiple) Flory. In 1976, he married Barbara Sunday, who survives. He was a former bricklayer for 38 years and a custodian at Central Local Schools for 24 years, retiring in 2007. He was a 1954 Jewell High School graduate and a member of Jewell and Sherwood fire departments for a total of 30 years. He was a member of Sherwood United Methodist Church, where was a past trustee and lay leader. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Farmer American Legion Post 137 and Sherwood VFW Post 5665. He was a member of the Masons 468 in Hicksville, Chapter 188 where he was a past master; a past master at Sherwood 620 and Bryan Council 101; a past commander at Bryan Commandery 74; and of Angola Yeoman of York. He was a member of Holiday Lanes bowling leagues.


Also surviving are three daughters, Kathleen (Mark) Washburn of Muncie, Ind., Kristina (Jeremy) Odell of Bryan and Jamie, Sherwood; a brother, Russell "Bud," Jewell; two sisters, Loretta Zigler of Montpelier and Ruby (Gus) Becher, Defiance; and a grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, James and one that was stillborn; and a brother, Lester.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance Oh, with Revs. Katherine Riley and George Alley officiating. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery, Defiance County, with military honors accorded by Sherwood VFW Post 5665. Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Friday. Preferred memorials are to Hospice of Williams County Community Hospitals. Deloris E. Miller    (1927 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - Deloris E. Miller, 80, of Sherwood, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio in Bryan, where she was a resident.


Born March 6, 1927, in Defiance County, to Roena (Link) and Isaac C. Ankney, she married George Clayton Miller on May 17, 1940, and he survives.


She had been employed by Spangler Candy Company in Bryan, retiring with 15 years of service. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherwood, the Sherwood Lions Club and the Democratic Women's Committee.


In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Jim (and wife, Diane) Miller of Canton, Ga., Bob (Bobbie) Miller and Dick (Debbie) Miller, both of Sherwood; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Imogene (and husband, Russell) Grimes of Ney; and a brother, Delvain (Pat) Ankney of Defiance.


She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Ronald Lynn Miller; and three brothers, Jerome, Harold and Homer Ankney.


Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert Eble to officiate. Raymond W. Gibbs    (1922 - 2008)

 

SHERWOOD - Raymond W. Gibbs, 85, Sherwood, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, in Hickory Creek at Hicksville, Oh.

He was born May 30, 1922, in Logansport, Ind., the son of Jess and Mary (Ringer) Gibbs. In 1949, he married Jane Isler, who survives. He was a retired screw machine operator at the former Dana-Weatherhead plant and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and receiving the Purple Heart.

Also surviving are a son, Larry, Sherwood; and three grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, Michael.

Elliott Ray Burke    (1926 - 2008)

 

Elliott Ray Burke, 81, Sherwood, and formerly of Logan, W.Va., died at 5:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, in Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center.

 
He was born June 24, 1926, in Taylorville, W.Va., the son of Albert Sr. and Mattie (Steele) Burke. In 1948, he married Belva Duty, who survives. He was a coal miner, retiring in 1987 after 42 years, and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Defiance, and a former member of Central Baptist Church, Logan. He was a past president and member of United Mine Workers Local 1971 and a former Little League Baseball coach in Logan.

Also surviving are three daughters, Jean (Kelly) Roberts of Houston, Texas, Cordella (Billy Joe) Smith of Sherwood and Raycene Sarka, Convoy; a son, Larry, Defiance; two sisters, Lois Rosetter of Las Vegas and Emma Hatfield, Elyria; two brothers, Herbert of Delbarton, W.Va., and Dewey, Gurnee, Ill.; and eight grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a sister, Geraldine Isom; and three brothers, Albert Jr., Earl and Ralph.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel Baptist Church, Paulding, with Revs. Donald Holtzapple and Drew Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Memory Gardens, Defiance County. Visitation is from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Mast-Mock-Hoffman-Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Paul F. Culler    (1932 - 2007)

SHERWOOD - Paul F. Culler, 75, of Sherwood died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at the Hicksville Memorial Hospital in Hicksville.

Born March 7, 1932, in Defiance County, to Gladys (Dowd) and Alvin Culler, he was married to Lucile Brown on Dec. 23, 1955, and she survives.


He was an U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was bulk loader at LaFarge in Paulding prior to his retirement and he was a member of both the Mark Center Methodist Church and Sherwood Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Penny (and husband Bruce) Russell of Oakwood and Cheryl (Bruce) Caris of Sherwood; brother Donald (Gayle) Culler of Springfield, Ohio; sister Eleanor Miller of West Unity; sister-in-law Slyvia Culler of Edon; and daughter-in-law Marcia Culler of Bryan. Preceding him in death were his parents; son Robert Culler; and brother Stanley Culler.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday at Burr Funeral Home & Crematory in Sherwood.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Jim Stinehelfer and Rev. Tom Graves officiating. Leo J. Baden    (1938 - 2007)

 

SHERWOOD - Leo J. Baden, age 87, of Sherwood, passed away at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Harborside Healthcare Of Northwest Ohio, Bryan, where he had been a resident. He was a 1938 graduate of Sherwood High School. A WWII Army veteran, Leo was a self-employed farmer along with his brother Albert for many years. He was also a truck driver for Central Transport for 30 years, retiring in 1982. Leo was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Sherwood and the Sherwood VFW Post 5665. He had been a resident of Sherwood for over 60 years and served on the Sherwood Village Council.
Born on June 3, 1920 in Defiance County, Ohio, the son of Henry and Olga (Heisler) Baden. He married Shirley E. Prentice on October 29, 1943 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and she preceded him in death on April 8, 2001.

Surviving is his son, Mark and his wife, Pat Baden of Sherwood; one grandson, Shawn Baden of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Albert Baden of Bryan. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Shirley.

Memorial services for Leo J. Baden will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2007 at Burr Funeral Home, 230 East Elm Street, Sherwood, with Rev. Robert D. Eble officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Friday, from 12:00 noon until the time of services at 2:00 p.m. Private interment will be made in Sherwood Cemetery.

Patsy D. Hasch    (1947 - 2007)

 

SHERWOOD - Patsy Diane (Hower) Sakowicz Hasch, age 60, of Sherwood, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2007 at the Community Hospitals and Wellness Center in Bryan. Mrs. Hasch worked in Data Entry at ITT and Waterfield Mortgage Company. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Bryan.

Born July 10, 1947, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Florence A. (Thomas) and Fred Eugene Hower. She graduated from New Haven High School in 1966. On January 1, 2005, she married Robert Hasch and he survives.

She is survived by husband, Robert Hasch of Sherwood, daughter, Christina and husband Sean Powell of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a granddaughter, Rhiannon Powell of Fort Wayne; her father, Fred Hower of Fort Wayne; sisters, Sylvia and husband William O’Connell of Fort Wayne and Gloria and husband William Rumschlag of Decatur, Indiana. Her mother preceded her in death.

A memorial service for Patsy Diane Hasch will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, August 30, 2007, in the First Lutheran Church in Bryan with Rev. Richard Franks officiating.

John E. Sito    (1913 - 2007)

SHERWOOD - John E. Sito, 93, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at the home of his grandson in Stryker.

 

Born Oct. 20, 1913, at Dayton, to Theresa (Asztalos) and George Sito, he married Eleanora Salay on Feb. 18, 1939, and she preceded him in death in 2001. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Core during the Depression and at All Star Products in Defiance as a press operator from 1937-1978, where he also served as a union representative. He was also a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Hicksville, where he served on the church council, taught Sunday school and served on evangelist and stewardship committees.


Surviving are a son, Michael (and wife, Bonnie) of Bellevue; eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Steve of Bryan and Joe of Edgerton; and two sisters, Elizabeth of Blakeslee and Margaret of Bryan. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Yolanda Core; four sisters, Irene, Theresa, Mary and infant Margaret; and a brother, Julius.


Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. in the Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville, and Monday from 10-11 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, Hicksville. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Daniel Fugate to officiate. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Hicksville.

SHERWOOD - Ronald W. Giesige Jr., 33, of Sherwood, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo, as the result of injuries from a motorcycle-auto accident Sunday morning, July 8, on Ohio 107 near Montpelier.


Born March 16, 1974, at Lima, to Rhoda (Ford) and Ronald W. Giesige Sr., he married Miranda Sprague on May 24, 1997, and she survives.


A 1992 graduate of Fairview High School, he was self-employed and the owner of Ron's Tree Care, doing tree removal and trimming. He was a member of House of Prayer church in Montpelier, where he played the drums for the church Praise Team.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Samantha Giesige, and a son, Clay Giesige, both at home; his father, Ronald W. Giesige Sr. of Sherwood; four sisters, Cheryl (and husband, Larry) McKeeghan of Maricopa, Ariz., Laura Morrison of Continental, Arlene (Jim) Okuley of Defiance, Nancy (Daryl) McCullough of Ayersville, and Colleen (Robert) Mason of Glendale, Ariz.; and three brothers, Rodney (and wife, Nancy) Giesige of Wauseon, Tom (Beth) Giesige of Sherwood and Tony (Nannette) Giesige of Defiance.


He was preceded in death by his mother and a daughter, Shalin, who died in infancy.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-9 at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home and Monday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Church of the Nazarene, 1656 Jefferson Ave., Defiance.


Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the church with the Rev. Don Harris to officiate. Interment will be at Sherwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the House of Prayer.
