Sherwood Tree Lighting draws Crowd

The Village's First Tree Lighting Ceremony Saturday Dec 4th was a huge success with about 80 people braving the cold and frosty night. The mistress of ceremonies was Carol Hull, President of the Sherwood Area Economic Development Corporation. Long time village resident Elwood Mohley, 90, was chosen as the honored guest to light this years tree . Elwood ran the village grocery store downtown called the Beehive from late 20's to the early 70's where Devault's Mini-Mart now sets . Elwood was delivered to the ceremony by another long time Sherwood resident Harvey Boyce, in his Model T.

Coffee, hot cider and all kinds of delicious home baked cookies were enjoyed by young and old as they waited for the Honored guest. Elwood arrived and threw a large switch to the countdown of the crowd to light the tree early in the proceedings and also shared recollections of earlier Sherwood Christmases.

Rev. Katherine Riley from the Sherwood United Methodist Church spoke on the meaning of the twelve days of Christmas and lead the group in the singing of Christmas carols.  Mrs. Claus handed out candy canes to the guest and invited the kids to join Santa at the VFW, 6pm, on December 18th.

Many resident are still talking about this grand gathering and hope that this will be a Christmas tradition for many more years to come. Sherwood's past Christmas trees were set out by the village offices and through the years they have gotten smaller, but now we have one that has survived much, the many years of school children hanging from it, the demolition of the school beside it, and now to become a Christmas tree. The tree itself is about 20' tall and 12' wide. Now Sherwood, that's a Christmas Tree.
