The Revitalization of Sherwood Memorial Park

The revitalization of Sherwood Memorial Park is being made possible by a $41,000 NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.  Local matching dollars are being raised.  A number of local individuals and organizations have contributed to the campaign for matching funds.  [Link to Sponsors]  Individuals and organizations can also help by donating for an engraved granite paver.  [Link to paver application]

The concept of revitalization for Sherwood Memorial Park began a little over two years ago, in September of 2003.  The project started when Dave Guilford suggested, to the Friends of the Library, that they install a gazebo in the area behind the library.  It was quickly determined there wasn't enough room at that location and after careful thought, Memorial Park was selected.  The parkland held the most promise for the gazebo site because of its parking lot, lighting, pond and close proximity to the downtown area.  The idea snowballed and the possibility for something more developed.  This pre-existing, underdeveloped, underutilized park afforded the perfect opportunity to create a gathering place for the community. The location, in the heart of Sherwood, makes it an ideal destination to walk, bike or drive to.  The Friends submitted the suggestion to the village council for approval.  Shortly thereafter, a collaboration was formed to build strength and support for the revitalization effort. The primary focus of the park is to foster a sense of community, by providing recreational opportunities for people of all ages and all abilities.

The gazebo, paver paths and landscaping will make a statement of our community’s commitment to enriching lives and instilling a renewed sense of pride in Sherwood.  The engraved messages on pavers from both business and residents create a "Memory Lane" that establishes ones place in the history of Sherwood.  The park's location, beside the cemetery, will offer a place of respite and consolation to those who are in mourning.  Benches in the Garden of Honor and Garden of Remembrance, as well as those in the gazebo, will provide resting areas for friends and family.

The gazebo is the jewel in the park's crown and will serve as a backdrop for concerts, weddings, memorial services, as well as special events.  The gazebo will be a place to relax, unwind from a stressful day or perhaps enjoy reading a book from the local library

A garden, visible from both the park and the cemetery, to be created at the gap in the hedge will allow young, old and in between to work together in creating a multi-sensory habitat for birds and butterflies.

The stocked pond, with aerator fountain and benches, will provide opportunity for adults and youngsters to enjoy quiet time trying to catch the "big one".

The enabling garden, with raised planters, will allow visually impaired, wheelchair bound or physically challenged individuals to enjoy gardening at a level that is comfortable for them.

When seeking the NatureWorks grant, special attention was given to the park’s benefits for seniors and the physically challenged, but the parks vision encompasses so much more.  It has been designed for the living and the deceased, the young and the old, the physically fit and the physically challenged, for those in mourning and for those who are celebrating.  It is a way for Sherwood to invest in its social capital and a way for business to breathe fresh air into the economic environment.  In short, it is vital to the health and well being of the community.  Other towns and villages in the surrounding areas have "commons" which instill pride in their communities.  Sherwood deserves no less!

From its conception, the members of the Committee for the Revitalization of Sherwood Memorial Park have contributed countless hours of time, talent, knowledge and hard work to bring something, so very special, to Sherwood. We hope that you share the committee's vision and will join them in helping to make a difference in our community.  [Link to list of Committee Members]

As kids we would use this area for Ice Hockey and ice skating in the winter, and sometimes take a dip in the summer. These practices are not allowed any more due to liability reasons, but this area is still used by many families in the Sherwood Ohio area for walks, fishing and a picnic every now and then.
