Smta has erected a new skyline for Sherwood earlier in the month. I'm talking about a 175' aluminum communication tower that is located back by their barns by the water tower. The tower has been erected by Shertel Cable in order to move their CATV into the digital age. Along with the new tower and recently completed fiber ring, they will eventually be able to offer digital cable services very comparable to the dishes you see going up all over the place. Space on the tower has been rented to SAA bright.net for use of providing internet backhaul services and will also provide WI-FI hot spots in Sherwood as well. Click here to see more pictures of the tower construction at SMTA's website.
Village Council has been trying to put some things together to help address the flooding problems that have plaqued the town the last couple of years. Some of the items being discussed are ditch cleaning and pipe replacement, as well as digging a detention pond. Sherwood was rejected last year in its application for district and state grants to correct these problems, but council has decided to apply for a 100 percent grant again. Although some doubt that the village would be able to get a grant to fix the entire problem, the odds for obtaining a no-interest loan for the project are good. If another grant were petitioned, council would be advised of its success or failure sometime next spring. For more information on how these and other items are coming along keep an eye on the Sherwood News link at the home page.
The Sherwood Farmers market will be coming to an end for the season in October, not sure on the final date yet, but I will let you know on the Home page. I have spoken with many of the vendors this first year and all are pleased with the turn-out and are looking for next year to be even better.
Thanks to all the vendors and the visitors who have made this an enjoyable year at the Sherwood Farmer Market and a special thanks to Dale and Linda Bennett who have given countless hours to make the market a big success. The Sherwood Area Economic Development Corporation has provided a small grant to help with promotion and a permanent sign has been erected to welcome prospective customers to the farmers market. The sign was constructed of boards from a nearby barn and the lettering and illustration were donated by a local artist.
In my August newsletter I reported that the Apache Field of Dreams was ready to go, but about two days after the newsletter went out, football practice started. Well come to find out the football field had a few problems that had to be dealt with. Sources told us they were finding pieces of glass and rebar in the playing field. After further investigation it was determined approximately 70 percent of the new soil laid down for the football field was recycled from around the school campus. Unfortunately, that soil contained debris such as rebar and glass chips that was deemed hazardous to the athletes. Also found in the review was that the content of the soil was deemed to be nearly 100 percent clay, meaning growing new grass would be next to impossible and there were some drainage issues to be dealt with.
Agricultural consultant Joe Nester, a Fairview High School alumnus who, along with fellow alumnus Brian Mavis, are doing volunteer work to help restore the school football and softball fields. Nesters report to the School Board said that Jewell Grain killed the existing grass on the football field according to the wishes of those involved, Timcor removed the field’s top portion. The soil of the original playing surface was tested and found to be heavy in clay, so Timcor brought in soil which included sand to help with irrigation and drainage. Nester also reported he had seeded the field according to specifications. Due to the dry weather, sprinklers are being used to help water the field, but watering may have to shut down when surfacing of the track begins, perhaps as soon as Friday. The outfield of the softball field has been seeded also, he noted, with touch-up and grade work coming. This field is also being watered, while fertilization is being done on both fields.
I will get some pictures of the football field and track in the december's newsletter and have some more info on the States offer for Federal funding in 2006 for Central Local Schools. 17 million dollars I hear, But the School must decide where to spend it and come up with their 25%. That will be in December's newsletter. .
The Bend Bridge replacement project is suppose to be done here next month, or at least that was the last target date. Took a look yesterday, and the road bed is down. The stone
base has been laid in the last week, so maybe we will see some pavement next week if the weather holds out. Put some stripes on it and we're ready to go. Lets hope it will be soon, the bridge went down about 1 1/2 years ago and has made life difficult for many in the area. Delaware Fire and Rescue, at Rt. 18 and the Bend Rd., has had its share of drive a rounds.
The road itself had to be brought up 8 to 10 feet in areas to keep the road out of the water when it would flood out every year. Well the state dug a big 3 acre pond to the west of the project on Rolland road, Singer's place I believe, the dirt from this pond was used to bring the road bed up. This road will be a sweet road when it is completed. So with any luck the Bend road will be back in service soon.
