Sherwood Postmaster retires

A 25-year career in the U.S. Postal Service ended in January for Sherwood's postmaster Ruth Barber. Barber, who was born and raised in nearby Mark Center, Oh., began her postal service in Sherwood in 1979. She worked as a clerk from 1979-86 in Sherwood post office under Victor Ramus, Sherwood’s previous Postmaster, and then transferred to Defiance. Besides Defiance, she also worked in Jewell and Edon, where she was a postmaster for about one year in 1989. An opening came up in Sherwood for a postmaster, so she transferred back here. Altogether she has worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years. To read more on Ruth's retirement check out the Sherwood News link on the home page.

Friends of the Sherwood Library

"The Friends of the Sherwood Branch Library are planning ahead for the month of June and Sherwood's Homecoming on June 25th. In preparation for a month long exhibit at the library entitled "Here Comes the Bride", a wedding album of local residents is being created and a call has gone out for wedding photos. The wedding need not to have taken place in Sherwood, but the bride and groom should be (or have been) connected with the community at some point in their life. A copy of a wedding photo submitted to the library will be made for the album and the original will be returned. The following information should accompany the photo: name of bride, name of groom, location of wedding, date of wedding and any other interesting information. A newspaper clipping documenting the wedding may also be useful and if submitted a copy will made. Photos submitted early enough will be displayed in the album at the Lions Club "Heritage Bridal Gown Showcase" fund-raiser for Sherwood Memorial Park to be held at the Fairview Elementary School on Saturday, April 23, 2005. Wedding photos and newspaper clippings may be dropped off at the Sherwood Library."

Neighborhood Watch

Back before the first of the year we heard Police Chief Charles Fitzwater was working on a project and funding for some sort of neighborhood watch program. Can't tell you much on the program, but a neighborhood watch does not sound like a bad idea. If some one would give Charles a nudge and send him this way maybe we could help him in his venture.

Lady Apaches

Congratulations to the Fairview Lady Apaches Varsity Basketball team. They showed that they are a team to be taken seriously. Having already won the GMC title for the second year in a row, the Lady Apaches beat Archbold 65 - 51 to give them the Division III District Championship and moved them into the regional play-offs. The Lady Apaches (19-5) played Patrick Henry (22-1) in the first round of regional play-off, The Apaches lost this game but not without a fight. The Lady Apaches held the lead for the first two quarters, then after halftime the Lady Patriots came out with fire under them and after 11 turnovers by Fairview gave the Patriots the lead in the third quarter and finally the win. The Lady Patriots then moved to the State semi-finals play-offs  in Columbus where they won the first round and lost in the finals. Again, congratulations to the Fairview Lady Apaches for a fine year.

School Superintendent resigns

Central Local Schools Superintendent James C. Fetzer has submitted his resignation effective July  31st. and said the resignation was due to personal reasons beyond his control. Mr. Fetzer said he has enjoyed his time at Fairview and will miss, the opportunity to serve the community and students. 'The staff and administration are quality people dedicated to the learning and welfare of  our students," he said.  "Our state report scores are excellent (the highest score in the rating system)," he continued, "the Fairview Elementary School building is a source of pride and the future looks good for our community." Superintendent Fetzer, who has 29 years in the education system, has been with the Central Local School since May I, 2002, when he was hired to replace Steven Young.

Mr. Fetzer came to Central Local from West Holmes County, where he had served as principal for seven years. His work history also includes five years as high school principal in Hicksville. He says he has no immediate plans to move from the home near Ney he shares with wife, Judy, and daughter, Janelle, who is a junior at Fairview. Son Jacob who lives near Columbus is about to make Mr. Fetzer a grandfather, and son Josh is a student at Baldwin Wallace College.

Defiance County Economic Development

Matt Gilroy, Assistant Director for the Defiance County Economic Development Group passed this information on to us about the Northwest Ethanol Plant that has been in the works for several years. Matt went on to say that on Tuesday March 15th, Nathan Kimpel, the COO of New Energy spoke to the Hicksville Rotary during their weekly meeting.  Mr. Kimpel manages an ethanol plant for New Energy in South Bend, Indiana.  Northwest Ethanol LLC., a group of investors and business people in Defiance County, have been working extremely hard over the past four years to develop an ethanol plant in Mark Township in-between Hicksville and Sherwood.

Northwest Ethanol LLC, have sold their plans for development of an ethanol plant to New Energy, which is based in Cincinnati.  If all conditions are appropriate and the proper permits can be obtained, New Energy plans to develop a 100 gallon per day ethanol plant in Mark Township.  Investment for the proposed plant would reach above $100 million and the company would employ approximately 60 people.  If this project comes to fruition it would be an economic boon for Defiance County, especially those living near Sherwood and Hicksville.  The economic development office is excited to assist with the proposed project and we look forward to working with New Energy and all of the other individuals and organizations involved. Mr. Kimpel provided a website to the group that better explains ethanol plants and their economic impact.  The website is: www.ethanolrfa.org

Sherwood Ohio .com

Sorry not much is going on lately in Sherwood. But at the .com we always have something going on. Added a new page for Sherwood Churches and put the link up for Sherwood Summer Ball. Hope to get you all a little more info this year on Sherwood Summer Baseball and finally got a new Camera for some more action shots. I am looking for some feed back on online coupons. Am thinking about putting together some pages with local vendor coupons, what do you think?

Traffic across the website has averaged better than 1000 visits for the last several months and for the month of March we are tracking at a all time high of over 1100 visits. Some of the top searched keywords for the month have been as follows #1 sherwood ohio, #2 fire grant, #3 fairview apaches, #4 sherwood fairview softball pictures, #5 village of sherwood ohio #6 sherwood state bank, #7 central local schools, #8 fairview apaches girls basketball.

The May newsletter will include more pictures as I have not figured out the new camera yet. Thank you all for your visits and support. The traffic across the website shows me that somebody is enjoying my stuff. Next newsletter will be in May, until then this is Bobbybee signing off from downtown Deadwood.

One last item, we have posted some pictures in the Sherwood History link on the main page that have been sent by others, take a look. Glenda Hinkle sends this next picture for your enjoyment, she said she found it behind the baseboard in her dining room when they were remodeling  their house.
