Sherwood
promotions
Sherwood area Economic Development Corporation and some area
businesses have teamed up to start a marketing blitz to
promote Sherwood as a place to raise a family, start a
business or just visit. The marketing blitz will include a
commercial that will air on various TV stations, internet
marketing, news media, promotional flyers and more. We have
provided the commercial for your viewing at the home page at
Sherwood Ohio.com, Sherwood, My Hometown. The video is about
5MB in size, so be sure and let it load up, depending on
your download speed, once it is downloaded, push play again
and it will play smoothly.
The commercial hits all the buttons when
considering a place to call your Hometown, community,
family, growth, honor & friends. It is also nice to see the
people who you grew up with in a commercial. So keep watch
across the home page as we bring you more on this subject,

The
Sherwood Area Lions will be hosting Sherwood Shamrock Day at
the VFW
on St. Patrick's Day.
The decision to host the event was twofold. One reason was
to replace the sorely missed, community tradition, of
Christmas in the Park. That event was retired two years ago
because it was held at a very busy time of year and
performing groups and individuals had conflicting schedules.
The other was to raise the $600 remaining to complete the
club's sponsorship of the Special Needs Garden, which is
part of the Revitalization of Sherwood Memorial Park
project.
Sherwood Shamrock Day offers the perfect opportunity to
celebrate, as it doesn't conflict with local sporting events
or other major holidays. People are starting to "think
Spring" and come to life again. What better way then to get
together with friends and neighbors for good food and good
fun for a good cause!
Sherwood will go green on March 17! The event will be held
at the Sherwood VFW from 6 to 8 p.m. and will have "A Wee
Bit O' Fun for Everyone". The menu includes: Paddy's Potato
Bar, Danny Boy's Dessert Bar and Blarney Beverages. Charmin
Entertainment by local talent, reminiscent of the good old
days at the park, will add to the festivities. The
entertainment will be primarily Irish tunes and songs with a
few other popular numbers thrown in for good luck. Vocalists
include Colin Ruffer, Kelly Phillips and Tom Singer. Justin
Vollmer and Joe Meyer will give clavinova performances. The
Meyer Family will be performing and high school band
director, Miss Kari Rosania, will play the bagpipes.
Additional numbers are in the works. Of course guests should
expect some "Blarney" in the form of jokes, stories or
poems. Mrs. Murphy's boy, Bill, will act as Master of
ceremonies. Rounding out the event is the Lucky Leprechaun
50/50 drawing. Winners need not be present to win. Tickets
are $6 for adults, $4 ages 4-12, 3 and under free. Lucky
Leprechaun chances are $1 each or 6 for $5. Tickets and
chances can be purchased at the Sherwood State Bank, in
Sherwood, or from Lions members.
It is hoped that Sherwood Shamrock Day will become an annual
event and that each year the resulting funds will go toward
projects that will make a difference in our community. Oh
yes, we have our very own "Blarney Stone" and as the old
Sherwood legend goes: if you kiss the stone you'll not only
have the "gift of gab", but good luck for the whole year!

Steve & Ted's
Tool Shed, LLC.
We now have a
new laundry mat in Sherwood, yes a laundry mat. Now I have been
in this town since 1972 and never remember a laundry mat in Sherwood,
another milestone! The laundry mat is located in the old Wirth's
Super-Value building or what was once the Bee-Hive, downtown Sherwood. Owners Steve and
Ted's Tool Shed, LLC., opened the laundry mat the end of January. Their
plans are to open a Tool store in the front part of the building along
with enough room for possibly a 3rd business in house. The laundry mat
will be open Mon. - Fri. 6am - 9pm and Sat. - Sun. 8am - 9pm.

Keep watch for the may newsletter and we will pick up
more on where Steve & Ted's Tool Shed is headed in
downtown Sherwood.
DeVault's
Mini-Mart
Well it looks
like DeVault's Mini-Mart will again be moving in May.
The Mini-Mart started downtown 2 years ago in the old
Wirth's building as a dollar store. Last May the
mini-mart moved out to Ron Kuhn's corner in the north
end. I myself thought this would be a better business
location with the increase in traffic at the crossings,
but Patty DeVault told us that the business was just not
the same as when they were downtown, sales actually
decreased with the move. In May you will find them in
the Bend at 15119 Maumee St. Maumee St. is the north
road in Delaware Bend that runs east and west, then
follow the signs.

Communication updates
A project started by Sherwood Mutual Telephone
Association or SMTA should be near completed by summer.
The project was to update it's communication lines
within the city limits to fiber optic cable. According
to Mike Woodring, general manager for SMTA, the main
trunk lines have been installed and the next step will
be to take the fiber to each house. Once this is
completed we will begin to offer a bundle of services
including unlimited local telephone, long distance, high
speed broadband Internet access and IPTV (Digital CATV)
at a substantial discount when subscribing to all
services.
With the new fiber installed, SMTA will offer Digital
Cable TV and video on demand to customers in the village
with a wide selection of new channels. Later on this
year they will be testing some locations out of the
village limits to see how far they can extend the video
offering and still have a clear signal without any added
expense for new technical equipment. Well, I wait with
much anticipation of these new services so I have sent
my request the get the south end of town done first!
Also congratulation on providing Sherwood it's telephone
services now for 100 years, another milestone for
Sherwood.

Memorial Park
 Work
is under way at the Sherwood Memorial Park. Between
grant monies and private donations enough of the
proposed $50,000 to renovate this area into a community
park. Water and electrical lines have been laid for the
area. The park will host a Garden of Honor for veterans,
a
Garden of Remembrance for the departed, a Commemorative
Path, a raised bed garden for the physically challenged,
and a butterfly garden. The park design, once
completed, will include a gazebo, several gardens,
park benches and a walk path around the pond. Mayor
Vance even stated that the pond will be stocked for
fishing. This will become a grand community park for
years to come, right downtown Sherwood Ohio.

Can you guess what is
missing from this photo? If your guess was the old
Boroff home, you were right. The run down house was
bought by the village and bulldozed in January. It will
become a parking lot. |

Is the dozer distain to
visit this property in downtown Sherwood? According to
village council, the legal work has been started.
Another parking lot? |

Sherwood Crossings
should complete 12 more condo's by summers end and paper
work has been approved to sell 10 new home lots.
We should see
things start to roll on the north end. |
Ah, yes, another Sherwood-ite, read on.......
Although I have not lived "in Sherwood" for many years, I
consider it to be my hometown. I am 52 years old now but
when I was very little my grandparents (Emmanuel & Daisy
Weippert) lived down by the railroad tracks. I can remember
watching the people go by and waving at them in the
passenger trains. I liked it best at night--you could see
them better because of the lights inside the cars. My mom &
dad (Jack N. & Alice Cooper) lived at several different
residences in town too. No, not Jack Cooper the plumber---I
always got asked that!! Ha!
Now I just live about 2-1/2 miles south of Sherwood (for
about 27 years now). I have a Cecil address but Sherwood
will still always be home to me. My cousin Patricia (Schwader)
Patterson lives in Florida now but she also lived in
Sherwood for many years and I have purchased the calendar
and both volumes of the books for her as a gift. I know she
will love them and treasure them. I really love this
website--I can keep up on all the news and events that are
going on (especially the part of Harvey Boyce and his
model-T!!) I just love Harv!! Keep up the good work and
thank you for all your hard work in getting the news out.

Central Local Schools

It was back to the drawing board for members of
the Central Local Board of Education as they once again have decided to
proceed with a bond issue for the construction of a new middle/high school
building.
Set for the May 2 primary election ballot is a 3.94-mill, 28-year bond issue
that would raise $5,750,000, representing the local share of the estimated
$19 million building project.
Last November, voters rejected by a small margin a tax issue for the
building proposal. Since then, the board sent out surveys to district
residents asking for their opinion on how to best proceed for the future.
While only 4 percent of those who received surveys returned them, the
majority of those indicated a preference to go back to the polls again.
According to Central Local superintendent David Bagley, the proposal voters
will see in May is almost identical to November’s proposal.
The initial project budget is estimated at $18,096,315, with the Ohio School
Facilities Commission contributing $13,391,273, or approximately 74 percent
of the cost. The local match is projected at $4,705,042. However, the local
share actually is estimated at $5.75 million due to the inclusion of a
number of locally funded initiatives (LFIs), which are 100 percent locally
funded projects. This brings the total project budget to around $19,141,273.
The millage rate for the May tax issue is 3.94 mills, down slightly from the
November millage of 3.99. That reduction is due to a tax valuation change in
the county, Bagley had said.

Other Stuff
Defiance County
updates from Matt Gilroy, Assistant Director, Defiance
County Economic Development.
Good
News in Defiance County:
PEC, Inc. a start-up bio-diesel producer will start making product
in April at their Hicksville, Ohio facility. The company successful
received financing from the Hicksville Revolving Loan Fund and the
Defiance County Revolving Loan Fund. These funds will assist the
company in the purchase of the machinery and equipment needed to
make bio-diesel fuel. After initial research, I believe Defiance
County will be the first county in the state of Ohio to host two
bio-diesel manufacturers. American Ag Fuels in Defiance started
production last July. PEC, Inc. plans to initially produce one
million gallons of fuel annually and within three years the company
plans to employ 25 workers. We wish PEC, Inc. success as they start
this endeavor.
More Good News in Defiance County:
Keller Warehousing & Distribution, LLC. recently announced a
construction project at their Carpenter Road facility. The company
plans to build a 130,000 square foot warehouse at an approximate
cost of $3.2 million. The Defiance County Economic Development
office helped support this project with an Enterprise Zone tax
abatement that was approved by the Defiance County Board of
Commissioners on February 6th. The agreement was written for an 80%
abatement for a period of twelve years. Keller Logistics Corporation
currently employs about 160 people and has increased sales to over
$16 million. The company is one of the fastest growing businesses in
Defiance County.
Even More Good News in Defiance County:
Steve & Ted’s Tool Shed LLC. is a start-up small business in
Sherwood. The company plans on opening a retail store at the site of
the former IGA grocery store in downtown Sherwood. They will sell
tools, equipment, and other items at the store and on the internet.
The company also plans to open a Laundromat at the back entrance of
the store and lease four apartments on the second floor of the
building. The Defiance County Economic Development office assisted
Steve & Ted’s Tool Shed, LLC. by supporting a Community Reinvestment
Area agreement for a 100% tax abatement over a twelve year term.
The Ohio Department of Development recently announced that the Johns
Manville construction project that landed in Defiance County, was
the second largest investment made in Ohio during 2005. Johns
Manville Corporation pledged to invest $118 million in machinery and
equipment as well as a new building at their Carpenter Road
location. The Defiance County Economic Development office worked
diligently to support the company during this project. We are very
proud that the investment was the second largest made in Ohio last
year (#1 was Lockheed-Martin who pledged to invest $138 million at
their Akron location). This investment secured 85 jobs and will keep
the company in the Defiance community for decades.
Congratulations
ProMedica Health Systems, the parent company of the Defiance
Regional Medical Center, recently was named the #1 Integrated Health
Network by Verispan as reported in Modern Healthcare Magazine.
Verispan evaluates integrated health networks in eight categories
and 33 subcategories, including integrated technology, financial
stability, services and access, and the variety of specialty
services offered. The Defiance Regional Medical Center is an
investor in the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC), the parent
company of the Defiance County Economic Development office. The
quality of all Defiance County healthcare facilities assists and
supports our efforts of attracting new businesses to Defiance
County. Congratulation to Defiance Regional Medical Center and keep
up the good work.
