Around Sherwood

The month of August is always a slow one around Sherwood, Moats Park is quite with nothing more than an occasional "crack of a bat" to let you know the park is still there. June and July are always busy at Moats Park with the baseball and softball seasons in full swing. Then comes August, and it all goes away. Most Sundays in August the shelter houses get a good work out with numerous family gatherings. Moats Park provides many activities for the families to do, a playground for the kids, volleyball area, basketball, tennis courts, and more. If you would like to reserve the shelter house, contact the village offices for more info.

Truck traffic continues to grow through Sherwood and I'm not sure why. There are not many road projects going on that I am aware of that would bring this traffic into town. Sometime this summer we can expect things to get worse when they close the railroad tracks on US 127. An upgrade project is planned for the Railroad crossing. I spoke with the new mayor, Glen Vance, this morning and Glen said he was not for sure when it would be closed.

CSX told him they would give him 2 weeks notice and the crossing would be down for a week to 10 days. Should also bottleneck the train traffic. The train traffic has increased over the years to a train every 15min., Monday - Saturday. For some reason they do not run as much on Sundays, maybe something to do with double time pay.

This October, the congregation of the Sherwood United Methodist Church will be commemorating the 50th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the church on North Harrison Street. On October 23, 1955, the cornerstone inscribed "Sherwood Methodist Church, 1955" was laid at a short, but significant outdoor ceremony with the choir singing "The Church is One Foundation". The cornerstone was slid into place by Dr. Kenneth S. Leary and Rev. Paul H. Cramer after a prayer of consecration and the Cornerstone Litany was recited by the congregation and Rev. Cramer. Dr. Leary delivered a message saying that Christ is the Church's cornerstone. These consecration services marked a long-awaited realization for the membership, who worked so diligently and faithfully toward a more satisfying place in which they, and their posterity, might worship God.

The anniversary celebration is planned for October 9, beginning with a worship service at 9:15. Defiance District Superintendent, Rev. Rae Lynn Schleif will be preaching followed by time for fellowship and viewing an exhibit on the history of the church and a memorabilia display. A potluck lunch is scheduled for 11:30 am. A musical performance will round out the occasion at 1 p.m.

Those who are interested in attending the event or who need additional information, can contact the Sherwood United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 4582, Sherwood, Ohio 43556, Ph. 419-899-2492. Anyone having pictures or memorabilia that they would like to share should contact the church office or a church member.

Sherwood Crossings is again in the mist of building, spoke with Gary Butler of Butler Mohr Real Estate and he says that there are 8 more condo's being built like the first 8 that were build more than a year ago. The new condo's will be located just to the west of the existing 8 on a new road under construction, Heritage Drive. Gary also said that they have two more buildings going up just north of the original 8 condo's. These will be two unit condominiums and sell for about $89,000 per unit. Ask Gary on a proposed completion date and he replied sometime in November.

We have added a new postmaster since the last newsletter, Darla Kilgore. Darla took over the duties of postmaster in Sherwood in June. She comes with 20 years in the postal service and seems to be doing a great job. The postmaster job was left vacant when Ruth Barber retired after 20 yeas of service. For more about Sherwood's new Postmaster, read the article in the Sherwood News. Sherwood Mayor, Clayton Miller, retired in June and Glen Vance was named New Mayor for the rest of the term. And the big news is our Village administrator, Joan Raker, is engaged and will be moving to Florida, which will leave her post open. Not sure on Joan's timeline but last I spoke with her she was very excited with her developments in her Life! Congratulations Joan.

Central Local Schools

Central Local Schools have decided to take part in the Ohio School Facilities Commission Classroom Facilities Assistance Program. The total project, to build a new high school, is estimated at $18,096,315. Of that, OSFC would contribute $13,391,273, or approximately 74 percent. Local monies would fund the other $4,705,042. District voters will face a tax issue in November to fund the local share of the OSFC building project. The board has an Aug. 25 filing deadline with the board of elections for the ballot issue.

Board members have talked over six locally funded initiatives (LFIs), which are 100 percent locally funded projects. The list totals an estimated $1,284,610. Recommended LFIs included thin-set terrazzo flooring in main student traffic areas, at an estimated cost of $150,000; increasing the gym size to expand seating capacity, $463,250; two additional locker rooms, $222,360; relocating the baseball field and dugouts, $130,000; repair and reconstruction of the entrance to the existing facility at the demolition area, $175,000; and renovation of the existing school media center to house a central office, $144,000.

The first three of the six listed recommended LFIs, if approved, would be part of the new school building itself, while the last three would occur elsewhere (the OSFC had previously recommended part of the existing high school building remain intact). It was noted that alternate LFIs are possible at this point. Input from board members and from the public is being sought before final decisions are made.

One of the interesting items included in the pricing was the use of temporary classrooms for the students and classes while the construction were under way. Classes would have to be held in these portable classrooms for up to 2 years at the cost of $900,000. I could not imagine doing school classes this way, should defiantly be a challenge.

Congratulations to the Fairview ACME baseball team. The made another run for State Title this year, finishing a Proud third place.
